Maersk has implemented penalty measures for misdeclaration of dangerous goods, strengthening supply chain security through economic penalties and accountability tracing. Any failure to correctly declare dangerous goods or submit declaration forms in accordance with IMDG codes will be considered "misdeclaration"

The penalty standards are as follows: USD 5,000 per Bill of Lading for the global basic fee, and USD 15,000 per misdeclared container in China. The shipper and consignee shall jointly bear all consequences resulting from misdeclaration, including corrective measures costs, claim penalties, compensation for cargo loss and delay, and other operational costs.

Misdeclaration of dangerous goods is a long-standing issue in the shipping industry, as incorrect declarations may lead to accidents such as explosions and leaks during transportation, threatening crew lives, vessel safety, and the marine environment. Some customers intentionally conceal the nature of their cargo to evade regulations or reduce costs, creating safety loopholes in the industry. Shipping companies use high penalties and joint liability mechanisms to force customers to comply with declaration requirements and reduce transportation risks.
